Rally & Drift Handbrake Guide

The handbrake is how you rotate a rally car through a hairpin and how you open, extend and correct a drift. Here is the technique for each discipline, and the handbrake settings that make it repeatable.

  • RALLYshort & sharp
  • DRIFTlong & progressive
  • 2profiles

Rally and drift both live on the handbrake, but they ask for opposite things. Rally wants a fast lock and release. Drift wants modulation over the whole pull. A rally and drift handbrake with a progressive pneumatic curve covers both, as long as you set it up for each one.

// 01 · RallyHandbrake technique for rally

Hairpins

  1. Brake in a straight line and shift down.
  2. Turn in early, before the apex.
  3. Give a short, sharp pull to lock the rear. Clutch in if your sim stalls.
  4. Release as the nose points to the exit, then throttle out.

Scandinavian flick

Steer briefly away from the corner, then back in to load the outside rear. A quick tap of the handbrake helps the car pivot when grip is low on gravel or snow. Timing matters more than force: a consistent curve lets your muscle memory find the same lock point every time.

// 02 · DriftHandbrake technique for drift

Initiation

Turn in, pull the handbrake briefly to break rear traction, and catch the slide with countersteer and throttle. The pull is shorter than you think: too much and you kill speed.

Extension and correction

Mid-drift, a partial pull adds angle or tightens your line before a clipping point. This is where a progressive curve matters: you need to feel 20% versus 40% in your hand, not guess it.

Starting points only: tune to your car and your hand. On the SRP® HB, throw, tension and tilt are adjusted mechanically without tools — see how to adjust tension, throw and tilt. The output curve is set in the free HBsetup software, with presets explained in our handbrake curve settings guide.

Curve

Progressive resistance

Compressed air builds force with travel, so partial pulls are readable.

Rigidity

Zero flex

CNC AL6061 body and a rigid cockpit mount. Flex steals precision.

Profiles

Saved setups

Switch from rally to drift in seconds with discipline profiles.

Mounting matters: a handbrake generates strong lateral forces. Mount it on a rigid cockpit, not a wheel stand that flexes. Our mounting guide explains how.

// FAQFrequently asked questions

How do you use a handbrake in sim rally?

Brake and turn in first, then give a short, sharp pull to lock the rear wheels and rotate the car around tight hairpins. Release before the car points to the exit and get back on the throttle.

How do you use a handbrake to initiate a drift?

Pull the handbrake briefly while turning in to break rear traction, then catch the slide with countersteer and throttle. Use small, progressive pulls mid-drift to extend angle or adjust your line.

Should rally and drift use different handbrake settings?

Yes. Rally favours a short throw and an aggressive curve for quick locks. Drift favours a longer throw and a progressive curve for modulation. Save one profile for each.

Should the handbrake be mounted left or right?

Most rally cars have it to the right of the driver in left-hand-drive layouts, and drift cars often place a hydro-style lever close to the shifter. Mount it on the side that feels natural with your shifter. The SRP® HB can be ordered for the left or right cockpit side.

Do I need to press the clutch with the handbrake?

In many rally sims, pressing the clutch while pulling the handbrake avoids stalling and keeps momentum in slow hairpins. In drift, many drivers clutch-kick instead.
