Handbrake Curve Settings for Every Sim
The same handbrake can feel completely different in EA Sports WRC, DiRT Rally and Assetto Corsa. The fix is a calibrated range, the right curve and one saved profile per game.

Configurable curves are only useful if you know what to do with them. This guide gives you a method and three starting profiles for the SRP® HB pneumatic handbrake and its free HBsetup software. The method works for any USB handbrake.
// 01 · BasicsThree curve shapes
1:1 mapping
Pull 50%, game gets 50%. Honest and predictable. Best place to start.
Early lock
High values arrive early in the pull. Fast rally locks with little travel.
Soft start
Fine control in the first half, full lock at the end. Ideal for drift.
// 02 · MethodSet up in five steps
- Connect via USB-C and open SRP® HBsetup.
- Calibrate the full range: rest = 0%, full pull = 100%.
- Choose the curve and sensitivity for your discipline.
- Save the profile with the game name.
- In the game, bind the handbrake as an axis, deadzone 0%, linearity neutral — let HBsetup do the shaping.
One place to shape the curve: if you add a curve in HBsetup and in the game, the two stack and the feel becomes unpredictable. Keep the game neutral.
// 03 · ProfilesStarting profiles per game
| Sim | Discipline | Curve | Sensitivity | Mechanical setup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EA Sports WRC | Rally stages | Aggressive | High | Short throw, firm tension |
| DiRT Rally 2.0 | Rally / rallycross | Linear to slightly aggressive | Medium-high | Short to medium throw |
| Assetto Corsa | Drift | Progressive | Medium | Long throw, medium tension |
| Assetto Corsa | Rally mods | Linear | Medium-high | Medium throw |
These are starting points. Drive a familiar stage or drift zone, then change one variable at a time. The mechanical side is covered in how to adjust tension, throw and tilt.

// 04 · TroubleshootingCommon problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Never reaches 100% | Range not calibrated after a throw change | Recalibrate in HBsetup |
| Rear locks too early | Curve too aggressive | Move towards linear |
| Hard to hold drift angle | Curve too steep in the middle | Use a progressive curve |
| Input feels delayed | In-game deadzone | Set deadzone to 0% |
| Handbrake works as on/off | Bound as a button | Rebind as an axis |

// FAQFrequently asked questions
What is a handbrake curve?
It is the relationship between how far you pull the lever and the percentage the game receives. A linear curve maps them 1:1; an aggressive curve reaches high values early; a progressive curve keeps the start soft for fine control.
What deadzone should I use for the handbrake?
Start at 0% in the game and handle any small offset with calibration in the handbrake software. In-game deadzones add delay to your inputs.
Should I set the handbrake as a button or an axis?
Always as an axis when the sim supports it. An axis lets you modulate partial pulls, which is essential for drift and useful for rally.
Do I need different curves for each game?
Each sim models the handbrake differently, so saving a profile per game and discipline gives the most consistent results.
Where do I set the curve on the SRP® HB?
In the free SRP® HBsetup software, which controls resistance, sensitivity, activation curves and discipline profiles.
