How The Fastest Drivers Set Their FOV
FOV is not a preference slider — it is applied geometry. This is the method used at the top of iRacing and by real-world drivers who train on simulators.
Rule 01 · The 1:1 Standard
Pros run mathematically correct FOV
Elite esports teams and pro drivers don't chase a "fast feeling". They lock a 1:1 geometric FOV so braking markers, apex distance and speed perception transfer directly to a real car. Guessing wider only corrupts your visual data.
Rule 02 · Ergonomics First
Seat position before FOV, always
Set your eye height, wheel position and pedal reach first — then measure and calculate. Move the seat 10 cm next week and your FOV is wrong again. In iRacing, press Ctrl+F12 to lock the seating position before touching FOV.
Rule 03 · The Pro Window
Most pros sit 50–65 cm away
Top rigs place the monitor as close to the wheelbase as possible, at eye level. Closer screens mean a wider correct FOV — more peripheral information with zero distortion. Triple 32" panels are the reference setup in pro endurance teams.
Rule 04 · Adaptation Period
Give it 5–10 sessions
Coming from a wide default FOV, the correct value feels narrow at first. That's normal. Start +5° above the calculated value and step down 2–3° every few sessions. Within two weeks your old replays will look distorted — and your braking consistency will jump.

FOV Questions
What is the difference between vFOV and hFOV?
vFOV (Vertical Field of View) measures the visible angle from the top edge of the screen to the bottom, used by ACC, Assetto Corsa, AMS2, rFactor 2 and Le Mans Ultimate. hFOV (Horizontal Field of View) measures from left to right, used natively by iRacing.
How do I measure the exact distance to my monitor for the FOV calculator?
Sit in your active racing position with your hands on the wheel. Measure the straight line from the bridge of your nose directly to the physical center of the screen surface. Measure in centimeters for maximum accuracy. Most professional sim racers sit between 50 and 65 cm from the screen.
What FOV do professional sim racers use?
There is no magic number. Top drivers and esports teams use a mathematically correct 1:1 FOV derived from their own screen size and seating position, because it makes braking references and speed perception identical to a real car. They also set their seating position first and calculate the FOV second.
The correct FOV feels too narrow. Is something wrong?
No. If you have been racing with a wide default FOV, the correct value will feel narrow for the first sessions. Give it 5 to 10 sessions. If needed, start 5 degrees above the calculated value and lower it by 2 or 3 degrees every few sessions until you reach the 1:1 setting.
Why does the F1 series need a different value?
The EGO engine used by the EA F1 titles interprets the camera FOV setting as a doubled vertical angle. That is why the calculator outputs a dedicated F1 value equal to twice your vFOV. Enter it in Camera Settings and verify the scale against the virtual steering wheel.
Do I need to configure FOV in VR?
No. VR headsets render a natural 1:1 scale by design, which is why many real-world drivers use VR for track learning. FOV calculation applies to flat screens only: single, ultrawide and triple monitor setups.
