Pneumatic sim racing pedals: how they work and who they are for
A pneumatic sim racing brake measures the air pressure inside a sealed cylinder as you press the pedal. Because air compresses progressively, resistance builds the way a real race car’s brake line does: light at the top of the stroke, rising sharply as you approach full pressure. SRP® (SimRacing Pro) designs and hand-assembles pneumatic pedals in Barcelona, Spain, around its R-Piston V5 brake.
How a pneumatic brake works
- The pedal drives a piston into an aluminium cylinder sealed with industrial NBR seals.
- The trapped air compresses, so resistance rises progressively with travel instead of following a spring rate.
- A ceramic diaphragm pressure sensor reads the pressure at 16-bit resolution (65,536 steps) and sends it to the PC over USB-C.
- A travel regulator sets how far the pedal moves before full pressure (15–45 mm on the SRP® GT-R), and a tool-free adjuster sets hardness (soft, medium, hard).
There are no elastomers, springs or fluids to replace. SRP rates the R-Piston V5 at 3.5 million km with zero scheduled maintenance.
Pneumatic vs load cell vs hydraulic pedals
| Pneumatic | Load cell | Hydraulic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What the sensor measures | Air pressure in a sealed cylinder | Force on a strain gauge | Fluid pressure in a closed circuit |
| Where the feel comes from | Air compression, progressive by nature | Elastomers or springs you swap to tune | Fluid circuit plus springs or elastomers |
| Tuning | Travel regulator and air hardness | Elastomer stack, spring and preload | Springs, elastomers, circuit setup |
| Wear parts | Seals | Elastomers harden and wear | Seals and fluid |
| Maintenance | None scheduled (SRP®) | Elastomer replacement over time | Bleeding and fluid checks |
| Best for | A race-car pressure curve with no upkeep | The widest choice of brands and prices | A fluid-circuit feel |
The table describes each technology in general; feel and upkeep vary by manufacturer and model.

Every set uses a 100% AL6061-T6 aluminium chassis, 5-axis CNC machined with 28 µm hard anodizing, and SKF needle bearings on every pivot. Each one is machined, anodized and hand-assembled to order in SRP’s Barcelona workshop, ships in 1–2 business days and carries a 3-year warranty in Spain (2 years internationally).
FAQ
Are pneumatic pedals better than load cell pedals?
They are different. A load cell measures force and gets its feel from swappable elastomers; a pneumatic brake gets its progressive feel from compressed air. Choose pneumatic if you want a pressure curve close to a real brake line with no elastomers to replace.
Do pneumatic pedals need maintenance?
SRP’s R-Piston V5 has no scheduled maintenance and is rated at 3.5 million km.
Do SRP pedals work on PlayStation or Xbox?
They connect natively to PC over USB-C. On PlayStation and Xbox they work through a third-party adapter (DriveHub), sold separately.
Do I need a cockpit?
Yes. A pneumatic brake at full pressure needs a rigid cockpit: aluminium profile rigs such as 80/20, Trak Racer, GT Omega, Advanced Sim Racing or a solid custom frame. Flexible wheel stands are not recommended.
Can I adjust the brake?
Yes: brake travel (15–45 mm on the GT-R), hardness (soft, medium, hard, tool-free) and pedal angle (three positions), plus curves and deadzones in the free MySETUP software.
What warranty do SRP pedals have?
3 years in Spain and 2 years in the rest of the world. Replacement parts ship free, and every order has a 14-day return period.
Where are SRP pedals made?
In SRP’s own workshop in Barcelona, Spain, machined and hand-assembled to order.
